The Waterlog: Then & Now

With just one board under our belts in 2005, Mike’s sister came and asked him to build a board for his nephew, who was getting into surfing. But before taking that on, he wanted to get a little more spokeshave time in, so he set out to build himself a big board that could catch most anything early… the very first Waterlog.

Before all the technology that we benefit from now, the first waterlog was built with solid wood rails, two ¾” thick pieces of red cedar laminated on top of each other to be exact. While this allowed a little freedom with shaping, having 1.5” of solid wood running around the board didn’t help us achieve the goal of keeping the board down to an acceptable weight. Never the less, the board performed as well as Mike had hoped and he surfed this board for years to come. Come on by the shop and you can see the board. Most of the originals are now hanging from the ceiling. And oh yeah, he did make time to build his nephew a sweet 6’5” single fin, but that’s a story for another time.

With the Root getting a bit more true to the “performance” longboard style, we wanted to keep the Waterlog a classic log, and in fact make it even more traditional. With a very slight outline update to enhance its elegance, we dropped the nose and pulled-up the tail, making the Waterlog a better noserider then before while still allowing those cranking pivot turns to get you back to the pocket. Plus, we’ve added a 9’4” in addition to the 10’ so choose your own dancefloor! Check out the new Waterlog here.
