5-Day Stand-Up Paddleboard Building Class
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Grain Surfboards is proud to team up with Chesapeake Light Craft and instructor Geoff Kerr to host a build-your-own Stand Up Paddle Board workshop at our shop in York Maine. In just five days each student will build their own board, ready to take home for final finishing with varnish and/or paint.
They'll be time to explore the area, get out on the water and demo some boards (SUP and Grains quiver of surfboards) and just decompress from the ups and downs of life.
What You Get
Students can select between CLC’s 12’6” and 14’ Kahalo SUP. Materials will be provided by Chesapeake Light Craft, and include all of the CNC cut plywood needed to create the “hull” and internal structure of the board. These unique "Grain-flavored" boards will be fitted with decks made from Northern White Cedar, the same great material that Grain uses in all of their surfboards.
Tuition includes the use of all of the tools needed and access to the shop, showers, wireless internet, and lounge. We also throw in a home cooked breakfast and lunch each day. Students are responsible for their own dinner costs as well as accommodations, although we’re happy to recommend some nice places around the area.
What You learn
Taught by professional boatbuilder and CLC instructor Geoff Kerr, each student will construct their own board, using CLC’s unique stitch and glue technique that incorporates pre-cut marine plywood parts and user friendly epoxy and fiberglass. Geoff will lead you through each step in the process, then turn you loose to complete that step. You’ll also have the opportunity to lay a custom decorative fabric treatment on the deck of your board. Registrants will be contacted prior to the class with the information necessary to choose the fabric. At the end of the workshop, each student will take home the board he or she built, or may leave it for Grain to ship later.
Also included are lectures and demonstration of the prep and finish work you’ll need to complete at home. After that very satisfying paint and varnish job you’ll have a beautiful, one of a kind SUP that is sure to turn heads everywhere you go.
The class days will be dynamic, with many steps to complete each day, but the project requires no advance knowledge or skills, and we should find ample time during the week to enjoy some of the amazing recreational opportunities found around York Maine.
