One of the things we love about building surfboards in Maine is the opportunities it gives us to meet interesting people and do really fun things. We had a great time some months ago when Mikey DeTemple, Kassia Meador and Scotty Stopnik came by to spend a week with us building their own boards and surfing some great logging waves. Along with a lot of laughs and a little nudging, the three of them built some beautiful boards. Listening to them talk about the experience, both then and now, I think they took away much more than just a surfboard. I believe that building your own board helps people understand and appreciate the value of a hand crafted item. It allows the builder to see that the whole is greater then the sum of it's parts, it represents the heart and soul of the person that created it. For us here at Grain, we're just happy that we made some great new friends, and there's a few more wooden boards out there in the world. Check out VBS TV's show Hi-Shedability to watch some of the highlights of the week, and keep an eye out for Mikey's new film Sight|Sound which is due out in the spring 2011. Part One Part Two
