Cold Winter, Rewarding Work

Before there were HomeGrown Kits and weeklong classes, before there was a Mobile Classroom, there was a garage and a builder and small collection of hand tools. Before all that we are today, there were custom wooden surfboards. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that everything we do now has lead from the pure pleasure that we found with each custom board we build. While we do build boards all year, no time feels more appropriate to really sink our teeth into a custom build than in the dead of winter. When the days are short and cold, and all but the hardiest of students are staying away from Maine, you'll find us hunkered down in our shop on the farm, milling, glueing, shaping, sanding, glassing, polishing and cherishing every minute of it. And loving the process helps us to enjoy sharing the experience even more. For your viewing pleasure, here are some of the boards we built this winter. A 12' Drifter with some custom wood stain and his little brother the 9'6" Cutwater in red cedar head off to The Ocean State. Gorgeous planks on an ever popular 5'10" Waka. This beauty resides just down the road in Portsmouth NH. The Leaf is smallest hollow wood board we build. With all of the curves in this short length, the Leaf is a wonderfully challenging and rewarding board to build. Here's Johnny glueing down the deck. With her lam coat on. The finished product, set up to be surfed with either a single fin or small sidebites, but never both at the same time. This Leaf is blowing west to Manhattan Beach, Ca. A 6'2" Channel Island Biscuit, "glassed" with bamboo fabric. Custom wood burning by Randy Gaetano with a line from the poem 'Canción del Pirata' by José de Espronceda. It reads: 'mi única patria, la mar'. This lucky Biscuit is Baja bound. The Spray, with it's deep double concaves, is the most challenging board that we build, which also makes it the most rewarding. Keep an eye out for it around Redondo Beach, Ca. Got to end it with a good ole' fashioned glass-on leash loop. Thanks to all our friends and customers for a great winter. It was a doozy!
