The Offcuts Initiative

“Waste no Waste”

Though the last stop for Grain’s shavings and splinters is as animal bedding or garden mulch, whatever wood harbors even a hint of utility gets saved in the corners of the shop to await it’s full potential. So it piles up, gathers dust, and waits for the day – because we’re not always sure why we’re saving it.

Until inspiration arrives – and suddenly it seems obvious that all the veneers too thin for boards should be pressed onto skateboard decks. That all the short blocking and leftover stringer stock should be made into handplanes. That longer offcuts and leftover surfboard planks should be made into Sea Sleds. It’s obvious.

This dedication to making full and wise use of what resources we consume reaches across everything we do, but we highlight it here as “The Offcuts Initiative”. Where you see the TOI logo, you’ll know that the product you’re looking at was inspired by or made from offcuts that came from hand-crafting Grain Surfboards’ custom boards and Home Grown Kits. We’ll continue to think of ways to “close the loop” on our own waste stream, and to fold into our operation more recycled material and waste-stream elements from other industries as well, and include these in The Offcuts Initiative project.
