DREAM IT, BUILD IT.

Customization Options for Grain Surfboards

Ready to place an order for a custom board? We really, really want you to have the board of your dreams so we created this page to include our most regularly requested customizations to inspire you.

Each board is hand built start to finish by one craftsman who picks the planks, builds, trims, shapes, glasses, sands, and polishes. Besides this dedicated personal attention, all our boards include local sustainably-managed Northern White Cedar, appropriate fin boxes, low maintenance gore-tex vent, 4oz or 6oz glass depending on the board, low VOC epoxy resin and a lightly polished matte finish.

Below are some options that we can add to your board to make it 100% unique and about you. They are grouped into “Planks & Rails”, “Stringer Details”, “Graphics”, “Glassing & Hardware” and “Fins”. Each option is added onto the base price of your board listed on our website. If you’ve already placed a deposit online we’ll be calling you soon to talk over these and any other options. Otherwise, just enjoy looking though this catalog of sweet details and dream-on. (Click images to enlarge)

Custom Picked White Cedar Plank Pattern
No charge.

Grain Surfboards Detail
If you have something specific in mind, we’ll try our best to find the color tones and/or grain patterns that you describe. Northern White Cedar can vary in color from orangy cherry-wood, to deep rich honey tones to a very light white. Because it’s wood, there’s no guarantee that we can match the picture in your head, but we’ll do everything we can!

“Your Wood” Accent Planks
$150

Grain Surfboards Detail
People have shipped us wood from blowdown trees, old barnboard from the family homestead or just something distinctive that they’d like added to their board in small quantities. If it’s dry, in plank form, and longer than the board we’re building you, we’ll stick it in there and make it look great. Hardwoods may require veneering and pre-lamination for additional cost. Send anything you want and we’ll get it into your tailblock in the appropriate dimensions gratis.

Red Cedar Rails
$100 (Includes funds to support sustainable forestry)

Grain Surfboards Detail
While we prefer not to use red cedar because of the unsustainable practices employed in it’s harvest, we cannot deny that the dark tones can be a complimentary addition to a white cedar board. Red Cedar rails require far more work from the builder, but some people prefer the way they frame the white cedar top and bottom planks.

Red Cedar Wraparound Nose
$75 (Includes funds to support sustainable forestry)

Grain Surfboards Detail
We can take extra time to “band” the deck planks in the nose of your board with red cedar if you’ve opted for red cedar rails. This provides a more uniform look since contrasting rail strips would appear to taper out as they disappear under the top planks toward the nose (center stringer detail extra)

All Red Cedar
$250 (Includes funds to support sustainable forestry)

Grain Surfboards Detail
Though we don’t really like to do it, we can build a whole board with red cedar. Includes white cedar stringers at builder’s discretion unless you specify otherwise.

We call very narrow planks of contrasting color “stringers” though these are just planks and provide no additional strength. We consider everything over 1-1/2″ wide to be a “plank” rather than a stringer. We usually use red cedar, but we’ll use anything compatible which contrasts including reclaimed California redwood while it lasts. For all stringer options, you can specify spacing and/or stringer width, or just let us decide. Top and bottom are included in all options, but you may specify top or bottom only (same price).

Single Red Stringer
$25

Grain Surfboards Detail
Throw in a stringer on the deck and/or bottom of your board for that clean classic look.

Double Red Stringer
$35

Grain Surfboards Detail
We often use two stringers to frame center planks that have contrasting grain or color. Stringers as thin as 1/16” can have a dramatic effect.

3 Or More Red Stringers
$50

Grain Surfboards Detail
Mix it up with a multiple stringers and varying widths to give your board a vintage look. A total of 3” of width of all stringers added together is included – that’s 3” each side.

Wrap around stringers
$50

Grain Surfboards Detail
Connecting the stringers in a hollow wood board from the top to the bottom planks takes time, but it offers a look more reminiscent of solid wood boards. Usually required in the nose only.

Branded Logo
No Charge

Grain Surfboards Detail
Logos are usually printed on a laminate and applied to the board under the ‘glass. They are crisp, sharp and very black. Brands look like what they are – an impression burned into wood – so uneven edges and variations in depth and impression can be expected. Looks cool though. Includes deck and bottom brands.

Custom Graphic (Art provided by customer)
$25 ea.

Grain Surfboards Detail
Family crest or your kids’ best art off the fridge, we’re happy work with you to design, print and permanently add your art to your board. Artwork that gives the impression that another builder created or designed it is the only exception that we’ll balk at. Priced for each graphic separately applied to the board.

Custom Wood-Burned Artwork
Price Varies depending on design.

Grain Surfboards Detail
Our good friend Randy Gaetano is a master of wood burned art. Think of it as a painless tattoo for your board.

Bamboo Cloth
$4 per yard

Grain Surfboards Detail
Bamboo is a fast-growing woody grass which, when made into cloth, can be stretched over a board instead of fiberglass. It’s considerably trickier to work with in some ways, seems to create a slightly heavier glass-job and clears out with a smokey opacity less water-clear than fiberglass. Grass, not glass. Think about it.

Entropy Bio Resin
No Charge

Grain Surfboards Detail
Entropy Resins are the world’s best organic-base epoxy. Made with waste products of the bio-fuel and paper-pulp industries, we believe these epoxies are the greenest practical epoxy option on the planet.

Go Pro FCS Mount
$25.00 ea.

Grain Surfboards Detail
Add an FCS plug anywhere on the board and Be a Hero.

Glass-on Leash Loop
$25.00

Grain Surfboards Detail
These water-like drops offer a rugged and beautiful alternative to plastic leash cups.

Glass-on fins have a more rigid attachment than those relying on fin-boxes but are harder to travel with. Glassed on fins can be any style you like (we recommend the correct foil and template). Choose fiberglass, wood or composite or provide your own fins for a discount. We find that “Smoke”, translucent, or black fins look good, but we will glass on colored fins if you prefer depending on availability. Wood fins look best and perform great.

Note: for all boards other than longboards, wood fins (if specified) may be bamboo depending on availability. Bamboo is light and flexible and makes a great fin.

Glass-on single fin
$260.00 (Includes Fin)

Grain Surfboards Detail
For longboards, we normally glass-on wood fins hand-made by master fin-makers John Cherry or Juan Rodriguez.

Glass-on twin fin
$280.00 (Includes Fins)
