Summer School
June: halfway through another year... but as we crack open another summer, we can already look back on an record number of surfers that graduated from Grain School with a new board in 2011. This year we've added all kinds of classes, even three-day board blitzes that allow you to build a board in quick-time with a friend (or son/daughter/father/mother/wife/husband). We're having two amazing visits by Jon Wegener (co-re-discoverer of the alaia) and Cyrus Sutton (Korduroy.TV filmmaker and king of surf-DIY) who'll be here teaching short classes on their specialties. The weather in Maine is great in the summer and the water won't get any warmer. Still some shaping stands left – one has your name on it. You can reserve a spot online.
A San Francisco Treat – Grain School Hits the Road
For many years, we've been preparing to take the Grain Board Building School on the road, and thanks to some friends on the west coast, we're going to hold our first Traveling Workshop in the fabled City by the Bay. If it weren't for help from San Francisco Surfrider and our new friends Jay and Piper Adams, we wouldn't be able to announce the seven-day class to be held in Jay and Piper's cool old firehouse workshop. We'll keep updating details in a “Fracas in Frisco” Class Page so check back there for lodging and other details as we have them. Class dates are September 25 to October 1. We expect this class to fill pretty quick.
Movie Premier Under a Full Moon
We've been having a lot of fun screening movies outside on the wall of our shop, and we're really excited to be able to host the north-east premier of High Seas Films' new flick “Sight | Sound”. Mikey DeTemple and a load of really talented surfers made a movie that makes no comment about itself – just beautifully filmed surfing in a wide range of locales set to music. The sounds will be great, the moon full, the BYOB flowing, and the barn alight with gorgeous images that remind us of how we'd like to surf if we could. Friday June 17, 8:30 p.m. Tix $10 on the night of or online here. Kids 12 and under $5.
T-Shirts and Hats
We're on a continuing quest to find the most environmentally responsible way to provide surfers with things of quality that will be both long lasting and as enviro-sustainable as we can get. T-shirts and apparel have been a challenge - that is, until we found recycled cotton fiber. These shirts are so green they don't even use dye to color them - the trimmings from T-shirt production that are the basis for the fiber are color-sorted before they're spun together with a small amount of recycled PET. The ones we have on order are rugged-built, and have really nice cuts. Place advanced orders for recycled men's and women's T's and we will ship as soon as they arrive. Also, we're trying out a very cool trucker hat that's mostly recycled (PET and cotton twill) and some bombin' patches that can be sewn on your own old trucker to give it a new life and keep it from the landfill.
