New Board Design - "Spray"

spacer imageMost of our board designs come about when customers call us with a vision that they'd like in wood. Sometimes we still create new boards just 'cause we want them for ourselves. But too often, there's a board we dream of doing for ourselves that just never gets done until there's the right customer.  One that we've been burning to create for years is a version of the Campbell Brothers' intuitive brainchild, the Bonzer.  We don't use the B-word to describe this board, but with Duncan and Malcolm Campbell's patient advice, we completed our version for a special customer of ours, Ralph Williams. After checking it out recently, Duncan gave his personal seal of approval to our rendering of the technical contours and fin-placements. Good thing we made sure to build one alongside Ralph's for our own demo quiver. Thanks, Ralph.

Get Together Holiday Sale

spacer imageSpeaking of new designs, we recently picked our heads up and realized that we've somehow grown our line to sixteen separate board models. Unless they're very particular, we pretty much have something for  every surfer to round out their quiver with.  We also realized that we have over a thousand customers out there paddling around. This is so exciting for us that we want to get you all together once in a while – is that crazy? Next year we should be announcing various ways that owners of Grain boards and Home Grown Kit builders can get together and stay in touch. To celebrate, we're going to give an un-precedented 20% off of the purchase of a new Home Grown Kit to anyone that's already gotten a kit or board from us. But we don't want to leave the rest of you out – if you've never bought from us before, we'll give you 10% off.

Board Building Workshops Scheduled for 2010

spacer imageWe've been hosting workshops now for about two years, all the while asking people how to improve them for next time. But the most complete review we ever had was from Todd Balf, a freelance writer and author who built a board here about a year ago. He wrote about his experience in the October issue of Outside Magazine and that's inspired us to get off our butts and schedule the next year's classes. It's clearly been a unique form of fun for all our graduates, but it's also amazing for us – before the classes, we rarely got to share the experience with Home Grown Kit owners. But when we've got six virgin builders sharing the shop with us, we get to be a part of the whole damn thing with them, and that's priceless. Check out the schedule here.  See you in Maine.

Corduroy Party Celebrates the Life of Jordan Kelly

spacer imageAt an event to be held by our friends Jim and Tyler at their super-cool shop “Corduroy” we'll be helping to celebrate a young surfer who lost his life last year after just making it to 21 years. We'll be announcing the winner of a raffle for a 5'4 Waka built by Grain workshop grad Jeff Martin.(pictured here) It was a one-of-a-kind board when he finished it, with inlaid burled walnut dovetail joinery, but our friend Dave Rastovich was kind enough to not only sign it, but also to give it a test drive for the upcoming film “Little Black Wheels” due out later this winter.  You can still get tix from Stoked Mentoring to win this beauty, but you definitely should not miss this event, where you can get raffle tickets on the night, share some good food & drink & music (you don't have to be there to win).  6pm, Corduroy Boutique & Gallery, 59 Portland Street, Portland Maine. Proceeds go to the Jordan Kelly Surf School Fund.
