Free Wave Tribe Hemp Board Bag with each purchase of a Home Grown Kit

spacer imageLike Grain, Wave Tribe is a little company that's part of a small, super-sincere group that wants to change the way people think about the stuff they buy.  When thinking back on a lifetime of discarding used-up surf gear, company founder Derek Dodds one day asked himself "how much plastic have I been personally responsible for?" It changed the way he thought about - well - about everything.

With their hemp and recycled plastic bags, leashes and other great stuff, Wave Tribe is asking us all to join a rising wave of growing awareness that's "clean, clear, and mirrors a society of people that have recognized...the significance of doing the right thing." Grain Surfboards is stepping up by offering their awesome bags and leashes in our store.

To celebrate, we're offering a free board bag with every Grain Home Grown kit purchased during the next few weeks.  These cost about a hundred and twenty bucks on the street, but we want you to have one to go with the one-of-a-kind wood board that you'll be building yourself.  Home Grown kits can be built by just about anyone that can follow detailed instructions, has a few tools, and wants to return to the clean roots of surfing.

Beachley Fun-Gun

spacer imageWe received an order some time ago from seven-time woman's world champ Layne Beachley for a couple of Grain surfboards she wanted for friends. Possibly contemplating her upcoming retirement from the World Tour, she had also mentioned she was shopping for a fun-board that would work at her home break in Australia.

Layne's got a real passion for what's good and right.  Her Beachley Athletics Apparel website is crammed with so much information about maintaining physical and emotional health that it's hard to find stuff to buy on it.  She has her own charitable foundation to support young Australian women.  She's funny, loves dogs, and wants to surf the greenest board she can find.  How could you not love her?

We do, so we offered to build any board she wanted to help design.  The result was this "fun-gun" we made to some pretty unusual specs.  Intended as a fun-shape, this board is narrow, but full volume for its length.  At a gunny 6'-10" x 18-1/2" x 2-3/8" and fitted with three FCS sets, this board will be a challenge for any one with less than intermediate skills.  It was a thrill to get Layne"s input to the project by emailing screenshots from our 3D CAD designs and to see it come to fruition. Wanting the full-green treatment, Layne asked for a bamboo-cloth glass-job which gives the grain a soft, rosy glow.  We all like to think of Layne picking off casual waves on sunny days on her new Grain board down under - enjoy retirement!

Hollow Days

spacer imageThe holidays are coming, and this year we're all looking for something special that won't break the bank (pun intended).  At Grain, we're continuing to expand our online store to provide more products that don't hammer the planet or drain the wallet.  Besides the great new gear from Wave Tribe, we have our infamous T's and hoodies, all made from hemp, organic cotton or bamboo cloth, woodworking tools, board building supplies, organic surf wax, and more!

But for something special, you can find beautiful custom prints from Mike's brother Nick LaVecchia.  Anyone that enjoys the look and feel of our website knows that Nick has a unique talent for capturing the essence of surfing.

This is the second year that we'll have Grain Gift Certificates for the surfer that you know would love something from our shop in Maine.  Each certificate is branded onto a nice section of scrap cedar and comes with a photographic card inscribed with the giver's name.

Class Schedule

spacer image2008 was the year we introduced Grain Surfboard building classes that bring surfers right into our shop to work side-by-side with the Grain crew.  Without a doubt, this has been more fun than anything we do. We've had ultra-nice people from all over the world come work with us who have all left as new friends.  With the home-cooked meals made by our friend Molly, and the top-notch boards the students make, and the laughs and the waves...well, we just want to keep it going as long as we can.

So this January, we'll be inviting another set of students into the shop to feel the feeling that all surfers had for the first fifty years of surfing in America - making their own board. Call or email to save a spot.  January's cold, but the surfing is primo. Dates are January 25 - 31, cost is $1,575 and you walk away with a new board, ready to glass (Full year course schedule available soon).
