Grain Gets Down with the Brown

spacer imageIn a "global" economy, shipping often carries greater costs - both financial and environmental - than producing the products being shipped. This month we began a new relationship with UPS who'll now be our primary shipper.  Worldwide, UPS has shown it has an interest in reducing its contribution to world pollution by utilizing more hybrid vehicles, doing extensive research and even developing its own route-planning software to reduce fuel usage. Besides being rated as one of the most socially responsible package carriers in the world UPS also offers us more than the other shippers we have tried.  This translates to more efficiency for us, which reduces costs for our customers and friends.

New Kit Updates

We've been listening to all the kit-builders out there as they make suggestions for improving the experience of building their own surfboard.  As a result, all new kits will now include:

  • an updated Builder's Manual - now 170 pages of super-detailed step-by-step instruction. Even the most novice woodworker can build a beautiful and functional surfboard using the 180 annotated illustrations and photos, easy to follow instructions with clear and attainable goals, common pitfalls to avoid and more.
  • a library of nose and tail templates for most of the boards in the kit line
  • rugged aluminum vent screws with better fitting O-rings

Soon, look for new packaging that makes it easier to store and access kit components as well as CNC-cut tailblocks that simplify building swallow-tail fish. And keep those comments coming - we want to make building your own surfboard the best experience it can be.

Grain Works with CAD

spacer image

For the past year, we've been developing the ability to use complex 3-D software to design new boards and modify our existing ones in exciting ways never available to us before. CAD lets us take a more direct approach to designing boards because we can see and manipulate them as if we were shaping a board in real-life.  Our old method required us to create the inner structure in 2D on plywood while only imagining the eventual outside shape. Consistent with our come-one-come-all attitude about board building, we want to include everyone in the design process too, so custom board customers and the other builders look over Brad's shoulder - at the shop or virtually through email - to throw in their two-cents on these new shapes. Keep an eye out for some new ones fresh off the drawing board, including a 7'2" Fish and a 10'6" Pintail.
