Grain SHOP Update: New 12’ Longboard released, SUB Board in the works

Mike’s just finishing a sweet 12’ Longboard that we’re adding to the Grain Surfboards lineup. The prototype for this board was built last winter, and after surfing it, we created a 3D computer model of it, tweaked a few things with the shape, and will soon offer it as a custom board or kit.

We get more blog comments, emails and requests for A Grain Stand-Up Paddleboard than any other board we’ve thought about making. Folks in Santa Cruz write to us that SUB are becoming ever more popular and no one out there is custom-building these beauties from pure wood. Not for long... We’re perfecting the shape and we’re hot on the trail. Look for the Grain SUB coming your way soon.

We’re also pleased to announce that we’re working with Greenlight Surf Supply, towards offering bamboo cloth as an alternative to fiberglass cloth on all of our custom built boards. While fiberglass in itself is fairly inert environmentally speaking, the manufacturing process requires huge amounts of energy, whereas bamboo is a sustainably growing grass. We’ll also soon be experimenting with a bio-based resin as an alternative to epoxy. If we can dial this in, it will mean Grain can build a 100% eco-friendly board.

Grain Demo tour ready to hit the road

A few months back we bought an antique bread truck and started outfitting this beast to become the new Grain Surfboards demo van. Well, the graphics are on, and she’s road-legal and ready to rock. Keep an eye out at east coast beaches this summer and fall as we plan to hit the road to spread the wood. We’ve also received a special grant from the State of Maine that’s helped us to finalize our plans for a West Coast Tour and we hope to be out there later this summer. We’ll post our Tour schedule when it comes to life.
