Finless Fiesta- Paipo and Alaia Class with Jon Wegener
Thursday and Friday, September 26th & 27th
For this unique workshop, we’ll be privileged to have Jon Wegener back from Southern California where he is a pioneer in the design and construction of traditional Hawaiian finless sticks.
Each student will have their choice of building either a paipo or an alaia using paulownia with Jon guiding you through the process.
Students will cut their outlines, and under Jons watchful eye, shape the delicate arcs that make magic of a simple plank. Oiled and ready for launching on day two, everyone will have time to hit the water for a surf. We’ll have a quiver of wood boards for students to try in the evenings or whenever glue is drying, so pray for surf.
Days: Two days, Thursday morning- Friday afternoon
–Wave Tribe board bag or sock (order a MINIMUM of two weeks before you arrive.)
More Details: see below, or these links:
NOTE: this class is not intended for aspiring commercial board builders – we just want to share with surfers the great feeling of building your own board.
What You Get:
Each student will take home the board she/he builds during this workshop. The cost of all materials and supplies are included in the tuition. You’ll have use of all of the shop’s tools that you need as well as access to the shop, showers, wireless internet, and lounge. We also throw in a practically-gourmet breakfast and lunch each day. Students are responsible for their own dinner costs as well as accommodations, although we’re happy to recommend some nice places around the area and camping is available at the farm.
We’re also timing this class to coincide with Surf Re-Evolution on September 28th, so plan to spend the weekend and show your boards off. Details to follow.
What You Learn:
Jon will be available to guide students through the easy step-by-step process of gluing up panels, scribing and cutting board outlines, and shaping rails and contours. We will learn basic finless design concepts, adhesive applications, elements of edge tool work, shaping, sanding and sealing.
Call or email to reserve your shaping stand soon.
NOTE: Full payment is required to reserve a spot. Tuition is semi-non-refundable.
