Swell filled weekend March 19th, 2007, by Mike

Although the Grain shop was closed this past weekend, it was still a busy one for Grain Surfboards and it’s employees. The Maine Boat Builder’s show was happening all weekend in Portland, where Grain had a booth. There also happened to be a sizeable Nor’easter brewing off the coast. By Saturday morning the swell was filling in and the winds were starting to cooperate. While half the Grain crew was in Portland, the other(luckier) half was on the coast, taking full advantage.

It pays to wake with the sun.

How to make a surfboard look beautiful March 13th, 2007, by Mike

There’s nothing better than emails and letters from happy Grain surfboard owners. Please share your stories with us. The following note came into the shop today from Jess, who had just experienced West coast surf bliss on her 6’0″ Waka Fish from Grain Surfboards.

Dear Mike, Brad and Co.

A few weeks ago I set out on a journey to visit Steve in Southern California. Since it is dirt cheap to fly with surfboards on Jetblue I had to bring my new board! The board got there and back without a scratch; I wrapped it in pipe insulator and the glassed on fins in a styrofoam box.

I don’t think those west coasters knew what hit them when they saw my board. Every break we went to (Blacks, San Onofre, Cardiff reef, Tamarack, and some other place I can’t remember near Swamii’s) people looked at me with jaws dropped like I was carrying the holy grail.

A dialogue with one guy went as follows…
* Guy: “Is that a surfboard?”
* Me: “Yes.”
* Guy: (stunned at my response) “Really? How could a surfboard look so beautiful?”

Anyway, the surf was great and I had some of my first intense reef sessions on the board.

Lately, I have been riding my fish with two fins and it is AMAZING!!! It’s like carving down a mountain of powder or long boarding down freshly paved streets. The board rides like butter! It feels more amazing than any board I have ever ridden… I don’t know how you guys did it but the board actually connects with the wave better.

Regardless of four fins or two fins the board has been a fun challenge but more importantly an absolute pleasure to ride.

Hope all is well. See you at the boat show this weekend!

Take care, Jessi

New Shapes in Progress March 4th, 2007, by Mike

We mentioned earlier that local surfer Natty Graham was in the Grain shop building his own 5’8 double-winged quad. He recently finished shaping and glassing it, just in time for his trip to PR. Keep an eye on the site for updates from Natty on how his new Grain board perfomed. We’ve also got a new 6’5 diamond tail single fin being shaped and glassed this week by Randy. This board was modified slightly from our original Seed to add the diamond tail and adjust the outline shape a bit. More updates coming soon as well as photos from our new shop space. Stay tuned.
