Experimenting with Wood

February 7th, 2007, by Mike

We’ve got a couple new boards going in the shop right now. Local boy Natty Graham is working on a new 5’7″ Double-Winged Quad. By the looks of this template, it might be the lightest most progressive shape to come out of the Grain shop. In complete contrast to the 5’7″ Quad, we are currently working on a 12’0 Stand-up Paddle board. If all goes well, you can plan to see these designs added to the Grain Surfboards line in the future.

OK- enough with the teasers on the quad- we need full outline and detail shots- that board’s the next step!

  7. Mike Says:

Thanks for the comment. The double winged quad is in the glassing room, soon to be tested. Once we have refined the design we will be offering it as a kit as well. We’ll keep you posted and yes we do ship overseas. Keep an eye on the site for the latest news. Thanks

Can we get ballpark date for the stand up board? Sounds like it’ll be perfect for the ferry wakes up here in Warshington!Mahalo, James

The 12’0 is on the rocker table as we speak. Top planks are being glued on, then it will be shaped and glassed. We’ll be testing this template first before we add it to the line. Keep an eye on the site for updates. Should be in the water in the next couple weeks.

    thanks

Where did you end up getting the template/dimensions for the 12′er?

Definitely interested in the SUP kit. My bro’s coming cross country this summer and I’m gonna try his Starboard that he’s bringing across with him. He’s been doing a lot of SUP lately and is a total convert…not bad for a 60 year old geezer. He has a blog on Maui watersprots, lately the focus has been on SUP. http://www.ponohouse.com/ponoblog/ . He may be interested in swinging by and seeing you guys for a visit. If I can tear him away from the family maybe we’ll see you this summer.

You guys need to make some sweet wooden paddles to go with the SUP board…carbon fiber just won’t do it.

Here’s where to go for paddles: http://whiskeyjackpaddles.com/surfpaddles.asp

My brother has added a link to you guys on his blog. I also noticed a couple of comments that readers have posted about you. Have you made any contacts on Maui for a retail location?

  15. Mike Says:

Not much in Maui yet that’s solid, but tons of interest. Keep us posted and thanks for the link.
